Trail riders raise £10,000 for local charities

Riding green lanes and trails in Suffolk and Norfolk to raise money for local charities was the ideal mission for Dave Willis.
The co-owner of Orwell Motorcycles is a big fan of trail riding and a regular on Suffolk Trail Riders’ Iceni Weekender.
The charity green lane event was celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and hit the organisers’ target of raising £10,000 for local good causes.
This year there was a change of routes for the event which started and finished each day at The Angel pub at Larling, near the Snetterton race circuit, in Norfolk.
In past years the route has taken them up the west of Norfolk on the Saturday to the seaside resort Hunstanton while Sunday has been riding routes in Suffolk.
This year they rode green lanes and trails from Larling into west Suffolk on the Saturday.
They took in some of the King’s Forest, near Bury St Edmunds, where some trails have reopened so it was an opportunity for riders to use them again.
On the Sunday they went to Wells-next-the-Sea on the North Norfolk coast on a route that was made trickier by having to cross half a dozen rivers and streams.
Dave on his four-stroke KTM 450 EXC-F and a friend on a two-stroke KTM 250 EXC-TPI were riding in one of the faster groups of riders with Iceni Weekender founders Frank Tovell, Colin Pountney and Chris Rolls.
“I managed to keep up with them but, at the back of the group, spent most of the day riding through the others’ dust,” said Dave who prefers trail riding to track days.
“I really enjoy it. It’s the scenery, the challenge of riding green lanes, the terrain and making progress.”
The event raised £10,000 for charity through entry fees and a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses including Orwell Motorcycles.
