Team Orwell gets to grips with off-road charity challenge

POSTED: 24/07/2025

Team Orwell Motorcycles battled the heat and challenging green lanes to complete the Suffolk Trail Riders annual Iceni charity weekend ride.

Directors Dave Willis and Andrew Jay, ex-director Rob Walters and green lane enthusiast Richard Lane joined about 120 off-roaders tackling the trails in 10 groups.

The base was at the Angel Inn at Larling, near Norfolk’s Snetterton race circuit, where they camped Friday and Saturday night ahead of rideouts over the hot weekend of 12-13 July.

Dave said: “Much to my dismay we were all in one of the faster groups which was probably beyond my green-lane ability but good fun all the same.”

Setting off at 9am on the Saturday, the 160-mile round trip took them via Swaffham and the Peddars Way to Hunstanton, on The Wash in north-west Norfolk, for fish and chips before returning via Brandon.

On the Sunday, they headed into sunny Suffolk, riding towards Ixworth to Honington and taking in Botesdale on a 120-mile loop.

“Colin Pountney, of Suffolk Trail Riders, led our group and his great knowledge of the green lanes meant we just hopped off-road at every opportunity.”

Fellow STR member Frank Tovell acted as back marker making sure all riders made it through the challenging ride.

“We mostly came back unscathed with no major falls, just a bit of hedge clipping in deep sand,” said Dave.

Out of the group’s 10 starters, five completed both day’s rides as some could not stay all weekend.

Dave rode a four-stroke KTM 450 EXC-F Champions Edition, Andrew a 350 EXC-F Champions Edition and Rob a two-stroke 250 EXC-TPI.

“Everyone in our group was on a KTM which was good to see and shows how popular they are with green-laners,” added Dave.
