Suzuki has reinvented its popular single-cylinder thumpers by revealing dual sport and supermoto motorbikes.
The all-new DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM are the spiritual successors to the DR-Z400S and DR-Z400SM of the Noughties.
The fresh models share a new twin-spar steel frame with a separate, bolt-on aluminium subframe and aluminium swingarm, housing a new 398cc single-cylinder engine.
An electronics package includes power modes, switchable ABS and sophisticated traction control with off-road modes.
The single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine, which boasts twin spark plugs, has the robustness and reliability of the previous engine. It provides a smooth, linear power delivery, stronger torque at lower revs, increased power output to the rev limit and improved fuel economy.
Peak power is 38PS at 8,000rpm, peak torque is 37Nm at 6,500rpm and both achieve more than 80mpg.
Ride-enhancing electronic aids include three power delivery modes, two standard traction control modes and individual specific G (gravel) mode.
On the DR-4S it lets riders enjoy off-road riding with confidence on flat surfaces and undulating terrain and inclines. On the DR-Z4SM it’s tailored more towards flat-dirt surfaces, with a little more slip tolerance, to suit the supermoto character.
The DR-Z4S ABS can be disengaged at the rear, or front and rear. DR-Z4SM riders can disengage only rear ABS.
Long-travel suspension is specifically tuned for each model.
The DR-Z4S has 280mm of front fork travel and 296mm of rear wheel travel, the DR-Z4SM has 260mm and 277mm respectively.
Both have compression and rebound damping adjustment front and rear and rear shock preload adjustment.
The DR-Z4S is fitted with wire-spoked 21in front and 18in rear wheels, the DR-Z4SM has 17in rims.
IRC GP-410, dual-purpose, tubed tyres are standard on the DR-Z4S with Dunlop SPORTMAX Q5A on the DR-Z4SM.
Ground clearance is 300mm on S, 260mm on SM. Seat heights are 920mm and 890mm and they weigh 151kg and 154kg respectively. An aluminium under guard is standard.
All lights are LED.
The DR-Z4S is available in Suzuki’s signature off-road champion yellow and solid iron grey, both with black rims.
The DR-Z4SM comes in a new blue/grey scheme, dubbed sky grey, and white with blue rims.
A range of accessories includes hand guards, lower seat and rear carrier rack.
Pricing will be confirmed in the new year, ahead of DR-Z4S and SM arriving in summer.
