Bigger KTM flagship adventure bike debuts automated manual gearbox

POSTED: 30/10/2024

KTM’s biggest adventure bike is also its most technologically advanced with the launch of an all-new automated manual gearbox.

The 2025 1390 Super Adventure S Evo flagship features the all-new automated manual transmission (AMT), a first for KTM and exclusive to the S Evo. The standard S model gets a traditional clutch and six-speed manual gearbox.

Both models boast a stiffer frame to improve handling and stability. The footpegs are set 8mm lower and 10mm wider to improve rider comfort with a greater knee angle.

The latest-generation semi-active suspension has been tuned to be more precise with consistent damping behaviour.

Styling and ergonomics have been updated with new bodywork and seat, all-new LED headlight, new windshields and storage compartment.

The engine, up from 1,300 to 1,350cc, produces 173PS at 9,500rpm and 145Nm of torque at 8,000rpm thanks to reworked engine components and all-new Camshift technology.

This provides improved rideability at low revs, higher peak performance, low emissions and fuel consumption.

The innovative AMT allows the rider to choose between traditional manual shifting, without a clutch, in M mode using the foot lever or bar-mounted paddles or a completely twist-and-go automated transmission in A mode.

Once first gear is engaged, forward drive is initiated by raising the engine speed until the centrifugal clutch engages and off you go so it is impossible to stall.

AMT features a P-N-1-2-3-4-5-6 sequence. P denotes park with the gearbox locking to prevent unwanted rolling.

Park and neutral can be selected only using the shift paddle on the handlebar switch cube, whether the engine is running or not. The front or rear brake needs to be applied to engage first gear.

Gear shifts take 50 milliseconds, comparable to a traditional transmission using a Quickshifter+.

The AMT’s shifting modes work in unison with ride modes.

AMT will feature on further models in future years.

The 1390 Super Adventure motorbikes get KTM’s new premium, portrait-mounted, touchscreen V80 TFT dashboard, a new generation of premium electronic and electric architecture and rider usability.

The eight-inch touchscreen features inductive technology, so can be used when wearing thick winter gloves. An innovative anti-reflex, anti-fingerprint and anti-glare coating makes it easy to read.

A more compact, fifth-generation Bosch front radar sensor for adaptive cruise control, with brake assistance, collision warning and distance warning, is standard on S Evo and optional on S.

The new adaptive cruise control, combined with AMT, stops the motorbike if the vehicle in front comes to a standstill. Once that vehicle moves, the motorbike will follow automatically.

The new 1390 Super Adventure models will be available from February. Prices are not yet available.
